Summary

This grant is available to researchers working in the state of Ohio who are focused on ecological, natural‑area, or biodiversity studies under the auspices of the state’s natural areas division. Applicants may request funding of up to $5,000 to carry out research aligned with the goals of conservation, habitat protection, species monitoring or ecosystem assessment. The eligible applicants include scientists affiliated with institutions, academic programs, or conservation organizations—it is not intended for individuals working entirely independently.

The funds are intended for direct research expenses such as equipment, supplies, stipends or field travel associated with the project; however, funds may not be used for general overhead, broad travel to meetings, or costs not essential to the project objectives. Applicants are required to submit a proposal (on the designated form) that includes a timeline, itemized budget and a clear description of how the research supports the conservation mission. A final report, including a summary of the work and how funds were used, is required by a specified deadline after the award.

The objective behind the grant is to support research efforts that deepen understanding of Ohio’s natural heritage—such as rare plant or animal populations, ecosystem processes, restoration outcomes, or management effectiveness—and that can inform state conservation policy or natural lands management. Projects must demonstrate strong relevance to state natural areas, reasonable methodology and feasible timeline and budget.

In short: if you’re a researcher affiliated with an eligible institution and you have a focused ecological research project situated in Ohio’s natural lands system, this grant offers a modest but meaningful funding option to support your work.
